Lead With Your Head and Your Heart

Lead With Your Head and Your Heart

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about owning a business and leading a team. Those lessons turned into the principles that helped me build and grow my company.

One of the main things I’ve learned is that building a successful business takes brains and heart. There’s no way I could list everything I’ve learned during my journey in one article, but I’ve put together a list of what I consider to be some of the most important things that will help on your way to becoming a good leader in all aspects of your life.

  1. People matter. This includes your customers, your family, and your team members. They all have hopes and dreams. They all have struggles, too. At my company, everything we do comes back to this simple idea.
  2. Most organizations and people fail due to a lack of clear goals and focus. Lasting success is never stumbled upon. It is planned out.
  3. The biggest mistake most business owners make is not taking enough time during the hiring process. Slow down and invest more time in interviews before bringing someone on—even when you’re desperate for help.
  4. Search out people who are doing things you want to emulate. Ask questions and learn from them. It will put you ahead of the game in every area of your life.
  5. As a leader, every word you say carries weight. Be careful and wise with your words.
  6. The Golden Rule—treat other people like you want to be treated—can be applied to every aspect of your business and personal life.
  7. Stop wasting time doing ridiculous things to avoid facing what you’re are afraid of. Fear paralyzes your decision-making ability. Face issues head-on, deal with them, and move forward.
  8. If using God’s financial principles in our personal lives causes us to win, using God’s financial principles in our business lives will cause us to win.
  9. Look for every opportunity to show your team that you’re all in this together. Show them by your actions that leading is serving.
  10. Winning organizations must have a culture of communication. Without it, team members become detached and insecure.

No matter what business you’re in, it’s never easy. But by leading with your heart as well as your head, it can be soul-satisfying and a lot of fun for everyone!
